The hype surrounding Merc Force’s shock win in the superclass overshadowed the misery occurring further along the course.

Only 22 boats made it to the finish line on Sunday afternoon with the year’s Southern 80 event red-flagged mid-way through.

God’s Rival crossed the black and white check-point at 1.39pm and was the final boat to do so before the racing was called off.

The hype surrounding Merc Force’s shock win in the superclass overshadowed the misery occurring further along the course.

Three separate incidents resulted in a death and a further four people being treated by ambulance services — two of which were flown to Melbourne by Air Ambulance.

The first day of racing went ahead almost incident free, the race being held up for 15 minutes when a boat flipped on Saturday morning.

The observer was taken to Echuca Hospital by ambulance and the boat was recovered from the water just near Cadell On The Murray Resort.

Other boats stopped to help the boat involved before the racing continued throughout the morning followed by a problem-free Baker’s Blitz and President’s Dash.
